A talented painter, Avon Jong has exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions in the United States and abroad, and her work is represented in many important private collections in Australia, the United States and Europe. Jong participated in the first NY-SoHo Biennial, where her work was featured alongside distinguished artists including Cindy Sherman, Yoko Ono, Hanne Darboven and Peter Halley and her debut solo exhibition in New York was hosted by the Australian Consulate General.

Jong brings an abstract sensibility to the rich tradition of figurative painting. Her nudes and landscapes are both painted from life, plein air and in the studio. Her bullfights are based on photographs and are painted in the studio.

The color theories of Henri Matisse, Paul Cezzane and Hans Hoffmann are integral to Jong’s painterly approach. The push pull interplay of color and the strong geometric structure of her work with the grid recall aspects of the plastic paintings of the 20th Century Modernists.

In her nudes, Jong’s own female, multiethnic gaze offers an unusual perspective on the bodily form. Her use of delicate lines and jewel-like colors evoke the beauty and sensuality of the female figure. Her recent bullfight paintings a similarly unusual perspective to what is typically a hyper-masculine subject, breaking through expected tropes to get at deeper truths.

Avon Jong is from Sydney, Australia and currently lives and works in New York. She is represented exclusively at Soho Contemporary Art
